Brand

Karl Annus, born and raised in Tallinn, Estonia is a product designer. He designs eyewear for his brand Framed by Karl, but has also designed for other companies, e.g. Glens Backup Reading Glasses.
His eyewear is designed for quite a wide audience. When he started in 2010, he made every eyewear frame as a unique custom order for each client. Therefore ha has been designing according to his clients’ requirements and has designed for whoever comes into his studio. The ready-to-wear collection came later and was mainly inspired by the very same custom orders that he had been doing for years.

Background

I graduated from Furniture Design at Tartu Art College in 2010 and did my master's degree at the joint program “Design & Engineering” of Estonian Academy of Art and Tallinn Technical University (2014). I have volunteered in South America (2008) and been an exchange student in Finland (2007).

Muse / Inspiration

My main inspiration comes from the clients I design for.

... was a massage course - the best gifts are the ones that keep on giving and this one has been very useful.

... is not to buy cheap fast fashion items, but invest in clothing or accessories that last for years to come. It all comes down to keeping Earth alive for the next generations.

The message my brand carries

Framed by Karl’s production follows a sustainable approach. We don’t manufacture big quantities to store in a warehouse - as a matter of fact, we don’t produce to the stock at all. We start making a particular frame after receiving an order.
In addition, we emphasize to our clients that they should take good care of the eyewear and we do our best to make the product last for a long time. We repair and perform maintenance if something has happened to the frame.
Our design carries the same message. We don’t produce new collections each season to follow the latest trends. We prefer to design classical timeless eyewear that isn’t outdated after one season.
